Gillette, Gorski participate at All-State music conference
Two aspiring music educators who have experienced great success in the LCHS Music Department attended the Illinois Music Educators Conference last weekend. Tim Gorski and Charley Gillette both qualified for the highly competitive opportunity after submitting applications with the help of choral director Diana O’Connor and Matt Kastor, director of bands.
“In speaking with Tim, he thought this was such a worthwhile event for him – life changing, in fact,” said O’Connor, who directs Gorski in aCappella Choir.
Gorski was one of about 30 students in Illinois to participate in the Future Music Educators Seminar. There, he attended workshops and discussion groups led by current music students and young and experienced teachers that addressed issues pertaining to selecting the right school, being a music education student, landing and keeping your first job, and achieving a healthy and happy career as a music educator.
Gillette’s experience at the conference involved serving as first chair percussionist in the 150-piece All-State Band, Kastor said. He participated in two days of rehearsal with Dr. Richard Fischer of Concordia University, culminating with a concert on the Saturday of the conference. |

Four named Commended Students in National Merit contest
Four seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program for their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT last October. Danny Duncan, Kyle Hill, Niki Laczewski, and Anthony Osuma were four of the approximately 1.5 million students to enter the contest by taking the test. They were named Commended Students because their scores were in the top 5 percent in the nation. For their accomplishment, they received Letters of Commendation and were invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Additionally, Osuma was named one of 1,600 Semifinalists from across the country in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes academic promise in Black American high school seniors. He now is vying for a piece of the $2.4 million in scholarship money. Osuma must present a record of his high academic performance, write an essay, earn SAT scores that confirm his PSAT performance, and receive a letter of recommendation from Principal Steve Plank to continue in the competition. |
