Carla ThompsonThompson named state's P.E. Teacher of Year
The Illinois Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance has named Carla Thompson the state's high school P.E. educator of the year. Thompson -- who has been teaching P.E. for 27 years, 26 in District 117 -- decided to nominate herself for the honor after receiving encouragement from colleagues. She qualified for the state level competition after winning a similar honor for the Northeast District of Illinois.
In addition to submitting recommendation letters from administrators, colleagues and parents, Thompson had to write five essays explaining her teaching philosophy, her experience and future goals, among other topics. She said she believes her part in the development of the P.E. program at LCHS was one accomplishment that made her a quality candidate. Other standout attributes: her rapport with the students and ability to "make them excited about what they do."
According to IAHPERD, elected educators should have the ability to "motivate today's youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity."
Thompson, who also has coached volleyball and gymnastics throughout her career, officially will accept her award in November. She then will be considered for the Midwest award, followed by the national award.

Members of the a Capella Choir warm up after reviewing the judges' comments on their performances at state contest on April 8.
Four LCHS music groups received top ratings at the IHSA State Music Organizational Contest on April 8. Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, a Capella Choir and Jazz Choir each earned a Division I score for its performance at Warren Township High School.
Each group performed three pieces, which it had been preparing for the past couple of months. Additionally, the Wind Ensemble and a Capella Choir had to sight read a piece they had never seen before; the groups had 10 minutes to look over and discuss the unfamiliar material - without singing or playing one note - before performing for the judges. The music groups were scored in several categories, including tone quality, blending and balance, and rhythm. Unlike most athletic events where teams are competing against other teams, the musical groups primarily were competing against themselves and the music.

Ian LutzLutz qualifies for National Merit competition
Junior Ian Lutz has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for being among the highest scorers on the PSAT, an accomplishment that moves him one step closer to the running for NMSC scholarships. Lutz placed himself in the top 50,000 out of approximately 1.4 million testers who entered the program. For this, he earns the opportunity to be referred to two colleges or universities of his choice by the NMSC.
Next fall, Lutz will learn if he qualified to be one of 16,000 semifinalists who will advance in the competition for 2007 merit scholarship awards. Those awards are given based on finalists' academic records, two sets of test scores, a school official's written recommendation, information about the students' activities and leadership and more.

Each of the 21 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members who competed at Oakton Community College on Feb. 17 brought home a ribbon. Going up against chapters from high schools in Lake and Cook counties, such as Glenbard, Niles and Palatine, the group faired well in the categories of public speaking, preschool, apparel construction, interior design and culinary arts.
The group took eight first place ribbons, six second place ribbons, and four Most Outstanding honors, which is the highest award possible in a category.
FCCLA members began preparing for the competition 15 days prior to the event. They competed in sub-categories such as cookie decorating and salad preparation for culinary arts, lesson planning and story telling for preschool, and prom, semi-formal and two-piece designs for apparel construction.

Coach Carla Thompson accepts a sportsmanship award Dec. 1 with her varsity volleyball team.

The LCHS gymnasium soon will boast its first banner, after the varsity volleyball team earned the first major athletic award in the school’s young history. Coach Carla Thompson and her team accepted the Zebras of Northern Illinois Officials Association Sportsmanship Banner on Dec. 1. This is the first year of the banner's existence.
Presented to the team by Nancy Nester, an Illinois High School Association official, this top award is designed to honor the coach, players, and fans who best “demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship during the 2005-2006 season,” according to the plaque the Eagles received. LCHS was one of 169 schools considered for the award, voted upon by ZONI officials. All volleyball levels, freshman through varsity, are eligible. Other schools that displayed good sportsmanship received certificates.
Thompson, who has coached volleyball for 15 years, commended the players, their parents, and the fans for staying positive despite a 2-24 season record.
“[The award] says a lot about the kids. They always came ready to learn,” she said.
