Katie Whitehurst
Whitehurst selected as speaker for graduation
Senior Katie Whitehurst was selected by a committee to speak in front of her graduating class during the commencement ceremony on May 29. Whitehurst applied for the job mid-April by completing an application and creating a 2-3 minute long speech which she presented in front of the committee judges. These judges included faculty Jessica Bowman, Katie Cook, Susan Arendas, and Aryan Haren.
“I enjoy being in front of people,” Whitehurst said. “Plus, I think that [speaking at graduation] is a good way to show my pride for the school.”
Ultimately Whitehurst was chosen out of eight applicants because of the quality of her speech and the numerous activities which made her the best candidate to deliver a speech, according to Bowman.
“[We were looking for] someone that reflected Lakes appropriately,” Bowman said.
To create the speech, Whitehurst took suggestions from Cathy Ingram, her advanced speech teacher, and also took influences from her own life and experiences. Whitehurst’s speech appropriately focuses on change and being the first graduating class.

Junior Kraenzle receives international recognition for chemistry poster design
When junior Amanda Kraenzle developed an idea for her chemistry poster assignment last spring, she never imagined it would garner international attention. But it did.
Kraenzle's poster design was one of 12 runners-up — and the only winner or runner-up from the United States — out of 944 submissions internationally to be recognized after entering a competition sponsored by the Korean Chemical Society. Three posters were named winners. The theme of the contest matched that of the International Conference on Chemical Education held in Seoul last August: "Chemistry for Humanity."
Chemistry teacher Betty Overocker had her students create the posters for a class activity and decided to submit their work to the contest, too. Kraenzle said she came up with her design idea because the class had been studying molecules. Her poster connects various molecules that each is filled with makeup products, jewelry, and more — all things that depend on chemistry. Her poster appears in the January-February 2007 issue of Chemistry International.
Thirty-two countries were represented with submissions for the contest. The posters were judged based on the relevance to the theme, communication value, artistic value and whether the message was universally understandable.
Kraenzle, who has enrolled in several art classes at LCHS and plans to major in art in college, received a certificate of recognition for the honor.

Hertz, Ronsman accept offers to play college football at Winona, Akron
On Feb. 7, seniors Sean Hertz and Dan Ronsman accepted scholarship offers to play football at Winona State University and the University of Akron, respectively, beginning next fall. These accredited universities made offers to the two athletes earlier this school year.
Surrounded by family, coaches and administrators, Hertz and Ronsman signed their official contracts while sporting baseball caps from their respective schools.
Ronsman accepted a full-ride to play center for the Division I Akron, which is in Ohio; Ronsman primarily played guard during the 2006 season at Lakes. Although center is not his favorite position, he says he does not mind if it will get him onto the field faster.
Hertz will keep his position as receiver at Winona in Minnesota, where he will compete at the Division II level. He was offered a partial scholarship for playing football, and hopes to participate in basketball as well once the winter season begins.

Senior named Commended Student by National Merit Corp.
Ian Lutz

Senior Ian Lutz has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as a Commended Student for being among the highest scorers on the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Out of approximately 1.4 million test takers in the nation, Lutz's performance was in the top 34,000, or the top five percent.
This honor comes after Lutz was informed last spring that he had placed in the top 50,000. Although he will not continue as a semifinalist in the competition to earn one of the 2007 merit scholarship awards, NMSC will twice act as a reference for him as he continues to apply for admission into colleges or universities.
