Social studies teacher wins scholarship to attend institute
Jaclyn Shapiro

Jaclyn Shapiro, social studies teacher, wanted to do something this summer to make her instruction more valid. That's why she is attending the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Early American History this summer. And with the help of a scholarship, she won't have to pay a thing.
Shapiro said she decided to research conferences related to her teaching areas, U.S. History and Government, to enrich her teaching. During the week-long institute, Shapiro will be participating in various real-life activities that she can bring back to the classroom, including visiting historical cities such as Jamestown, working on a plantation, and role playing in a mock session of Congress for the Virginia Resolution.
The application process was vigorous. In addition to applying to attend the institute, she had to apply for the scholarship, which included writing three short essays and submitting letters of recommendation.
Shapiro said she is looking forward to meeting other high school teachers who share her passion to teach U.S. History and Government, and she hopes the institute will help her to build her resources.

Two music students earn All-State status
Two music students have qualified to attend the Illinois Music Educators Association's annual All-State Conference. Seniors Kaela Talley and Tyler Zumbrock earned spots at the conference after qualifying for the All-State Choir and the Future Music Educators Seminar, respectively. The conference is scheduled for Jan. 28-31 in Peoria. This is the second year in a row that students from the LCHS music program have qualified for this event, said band director Matt Kastor.
Talley, a member of the LCHS aCappella Choir, will perform in a concert with the All-State Choir on Jan. 31 — a culmination of two days of rehearsals and workshops with college professors and professional musicians, Kastor said. Talley first was named to the IMEA District 7 Honors Choir before auditioning for All-State. Alyssa Wittman, Mathew Braden, and Laura Gorski also performed with the Honors Choir.
Zumbrock applied for one of only 36 spots in the state to participate in the Future Music Educators Seminar. He will meet with current music educators and college music majors as part of the symposium, Kastor said.

Potter earns year-long fellowship opportunity through NSTA
Elizabeth Potter
The National Science Teachers Association selected science teacher Liz Potter to participate in a fellowship for the 2008-2009 school year. Potter is one of 185 middle and secondary science teachers who was chosen for this professional development opportunity, designed to offer resources to new science teachers as well as keep them in the profession.
Potter, who started her career in Chicago Public Schools before coming to LCHS, says she believes her high involvement in NSTA as well as a her participation in Northwestern University's Research Experience for Teachers program last summer — a seven-week committment — made her an attractive candidate for the fellowship. Additionally, last year she was an associate fellow.
For the program, Potter was paired with a mentor who she communicates with on a weekly basis. She also is part of a network of other science teachers, who share ideas with each other over the internet. Potter, who teaches various levels of physics classes at LCHS, gets an all expenses paid trip to the NSTA conference in New Orleans this spring as part of the program, too.
Three seniors named National Merit Semifinalists
Mike Scott
Raven Jackson-Stone
Rebecca Helgeson
Three seniors are among the 16,000 semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s race to qualify for millions of dollars in scholarships.
Rebecca Helgeson, Raven Jackson-Stone, and Mike Scott now will try to advance as finalists in the 54th annual competition, then as a Merit Scholar, which could earn them a piece of a $35 million pie.
The three Eagles automatically entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT last fall. Approximately 150 students at LCHS opted to take the test – which doubles as a pre-test for the SAT college entrance exam – and more than 1.5 million juniors across the country signed on for a chance to qualify. The number of semifinalists represents less than one percent of the U.S.’s high school seniors, according to the NMSC.
I was very proud to learn that we had three students earn this coveted accomplishment,” said Principal Jim McKay. “This speaks highly about the caliber of our student body and our faculty. I hope they all become finalists.”
Helgeson, Jackson-Stone, and Scott next must perform well on the SAT, submit a detailed scholarship application, and be endorsed by McKay to possibly advance to finalist status. Merit Scholars are selected based on their skills, achievements, and potential for success in college. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced as early as April.
