This club provides students an opportunity to participate in an IHSA sanctioned non-sporting event that challenges their minds. Students attend weekly practices from September to March as well as conference meets from November to March. The All-Conference Meet occurs in late February, and two home meets are scheduled throughout the season.
This official IHSA competitive activity meets primarily in the spring as our division's Sectional Tournament is held on the Fox Chain of Lakes in April while the State Championship Bass Fishing Tournament is held in southern Illinois in May. A two-part tryout is conducted to determine tournament anglers but anyone may join to attend meetings and practices in order to improve the knowledge and skills needed for the sport of tournament Bass Fishing.
The Color Guard is a co-ed activity comprised of students from all grade levels that uses flags, rifles, sabers, and other props, along with dance movements choreographed to the music of the Marching Band. The Color Guard is considered a section of the Marching Band. Performances in parades, school activities, and competitions are required along with summer camps and practices during the school year. The season runs from April through November. Winter participation may possibly be offered from December through March.
The mission of EverGreen Environmental Club is to promote recycling, green thinking and education. We will accomplish our mission through participation in volunteer activities both in school and in the community, including highway and campus cleanup, recycling activities and promoting a green lifestyle. We hope to lead by example and demonstrate that if everyone does their part, little changes can add up to big differences.

International Club provides students with a resource outside of the classroom for furthering their interest in German and Spanish language and culture. The club is run by officers, who are voted into office during the first few weeks of the school year. All officers are expected to meet together ahead of time to discuss ideas for events and meetings and also be enthusiastic advocates for International Club and program.
Mosaic is the literary magazine at LCHS. Students can be a part of creating this magazine by taking the literary publications class second semester. A student must be a sophomore-senior to join the course and have an interest in publications. The mission of Mosaic is to “create an outlet for students to express themselves and allow their peers to admire their work.” The mission of the class is to put this magazine together. Students on staff also have the opportunity to have their creative pieces published. Math Team is an activity for students looking to participate and use mathematics in relevant and applicable ways. Problems involve topics covered in high school mathematics courses, from Algebra to Calculus, but require students to look at novel situations with a critical eye. Frequently problem-solving skills play a greater role than “textbook” mathematics. Anyone with an eye for numbers and an appreciation for pattern would be an excellent participant. Students are NOT required to meet any grade or course requirements to take part in math team, and all students freshman through seniors are encouraged to participate. The team meets for practice bi-weekly, and competitions begin second semester.
Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a student. It brings to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community the accomplishments of students who possess outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character. To be eligible for membership in this group, a student must be a sophomore or junior who has been in attendance at Lakes Community High School the equivalent of at least one semester. Nominated students receive a letter of invitation based on their cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Interested students must then attend a mandatory informational meeting, and submit the required forms and essay for review prior to the deadline.
TheTalon Times is the official student newspaper of LCHS. Its purpose is to inform, entertain, and stimulate thinking among readers in a manner that is accurate, balanced, and objective. Newspaper is a yearlong class that meets every day. Students enrolled in the class earn a grade for their efforts and are expected to meet certain requirements each publication month. Some out-of-class time is required, for example, one Sunday each month – deadline day – for about 6 hours.Students must complete the prerequisite Introduction to Journalism to enroll in Newspaper. Depending on experience and interest, staff members are “hired” into certain rolls, including editor, managing editor, section editors, and more.
Pay it Forward, which meets the first and third Tuesday of every month in Room C315B starting on Sept. 20, is a student-driven club that seeks out ways to give back to the school, community, and globally. We hope to find ways to make it easier for others to give back as well through our events and projects. The Club is open to all students, at any time, regardless of their commitment level.
