| Auto
show provides lessons in alternative fuels
On February 17,
78 sophomores enrolled in driver education classes from LCHS took a road
trip to Chicago to look, sit in, and drool over several hundred new and
concept cars on display at the Chicago Auto Show.
The cars ranged
from $15,000 small compact cars to a $350,000 luxury car called a Maybach,
which looked more like a limousine.
Students were
also given an assignment to find alternative fueled vehicles, cars also
known as hybrid cars, using gas and electric to power them. The hybrid
cars also sport excellent gas mileage, as high as 65 miles per gallon.
The students reported
that they were able to sit in brand new cars, take brochures home with
them, and talk to representatives from car companies about their products.
The auto show had all of the popular car makers, plus some that students
had no idea even were around, like big monster trucks, made by International
Harvester, that now serve as daily commuters for the lucky few that have
$110,000 to spend.
Mr. Scott, Mr.
Abramson and Mr. Ribbens’ classes all got the opportunity to walk
around for about five hours with other high school students from other
schools, as it was school day. The tickets were graciously donated by
Raymond Chevy in Antioch. All of the students behaved perfectly and represented
Lakes with class and respect.
