Biology students study plant life around campus
Click to enlarge Students enrolled in the Environmental Biology and Earth Science classes began participating in a biodiversity study around LCHS school grounds during the week of Aug. 29. The study involves establishing 10 land plots of equal size and determining the number of different plant species within each plot.
Students have hypothesized that the more diverse the plants are in the area, the more likely the land can survive drought, insect invasion and other natural threats.
The classes, taught by Karen Day and Tom Long, plans to repeat this data collection process at various times throughout the year and record averages, dates, weather conditions and other observations related to the study.
"It has been a great learning experience," said Day, who added that the project is in line with the state standards of incorporating population studies and eco-interaction in class.
