Lakes students attend leadership conference
Twenty-three LCHS student-athletes attended the NSC Leadership Conference at Stevenson High School on Aug. 14. Selected by their coaches, the group joined approximately 560 student-athletes from the 14 other NSC schools to discuss topics ranging from what it means to be a leader to how to respond to peers and teammates who disregard school rules, such as cheating on tests and using drugs and alcohol.
The LCHS students – three or four were chosen from eight varsity sports teams – were grouped with students from other schools, which was an aspect of the experience that appealed to freshman Michelle Ronsman.
“We got to meet new people and we learned about the other schools and how we are similar and different than they are,” said Ronsman, a cheerleader on the varsity team. “Even though we are rival schools, we all got along.”
LCHS Athletic Director Troy Parola said one of the key messages addressed at the conference was the importance of listening.
