Math
fair adds fun, games to students’ lives Over
300 fourth through sixth grade students filled the commons at ACHS to take
part in the annual math fair Tuesday night, November 16. Helping share their
joy for the subject, the honors math classes at LCHS developed and ran games
to promote math.
According to LCHS
math teacher Sue Arendas, the students “are doing this to try to get
kids interested in math… to show them that math is fun.”
The participants,
all from area middle schools, were competing in the games for “prize
money” which they could later spend at the prize table.
The learning experience
at the math fair was not solely intended for the middle school students.
“Honors students
had to realize that kids are at different skill levels, and they had to
adjust their games accordingly,” noted Sue Arendas.
The math department
is looking to have their own math fair in the future at LCHS, perhaps with
students at a younger grade level. Before the ACHS math fair, Lakes students
were able to test out their games at a mini math fair that was put on for
the students at Gavin Elementary earlier this month.
