Sophomore Paulina Panszczyk has always enjoyed her science classes. This semester, she is enrolled in Chemistry Honors. When she heard about the new peer tutoring program starting up at LCHS, she thought it would be an ideal opportunity for her to help her peers while learning more about one of her favorite subjects.
Panszczyk is one of 14 students volunteering as a peer tutor for 10 teachers of various concentrations. Program sponsor Tia Parish said the idea came from best practices in education research and “the fact that [staff members] want our students’ grades and test scores to be above par.”
Parish began looking for potential peer tutors in honors study halls at the beginning of the school year. All volunteers are assigned to a classroom and teacher during their study halls; they stop in to help out at least three times per week. Additionally, the peer tutors meet with Parish during one period of the school day to discuss effective methods for assisting students who are struggling academically.
“It’s open to the whole school. That’s what we want to get across,” said Parish, who is seeking more teacher involvement and says she would encourage any student who wants additional help to take advantage of the program.
Parish also said she is open for new ideas and suggestions to improve the program. One thing on the “to do” list, she said, is to offer services before school a couple of days a week. Although the program is run on a volunteer basis this year, Parish says she hopes to offer interested students elective credit in the future.
