100 donations collected at Lakes' first blood drive
About 100 students and staff donated blood during the March 16 drive, organized by the P.E. Department with help from technicians from LifeSource Blood Services. Most of the donors were students, and about a dozen were staff members. Thirty people were turned away because they had been out of the country recently, because of their weight or because they had tatoos or piercings.
The school surpassed the P.E. Department's goal of 70 units, collecting nearly 100.
The blood drive was the first of what will become a semi-annual event at Lakes beginning next year. The more donations the school gets, the more money that will become available for a scholarship program starting next year. The scholarship will be designed for a student in his or her senior year who demonstrates selflessness.
