The guidance department hosted a College Night on Thursday, Sept. 21. The evening was divided into two sections: one designed for juniors and another for seniors.
The event was one of many efforts organized by the team of four counselors to assist students trying to piece together their post-secondary school plans. The department has arranged for nearly two dozen college and military visits, which are scheduled during lunch periods at school. Those visiting range from the College of Lake County to the University of Illinois to the Marine Corps. Additionally, a financial aid information night is slated for Dec. 7, and students are invited to attend the College Fair at CLC on Oct. 26.
Students can locate other resources, such as scholarship opportunities, applications, and more by visiting the guidance office and making regular stops at the department's informational bulletin boards, all on the second floor.
Counselor Gwen Varney said the first graduating class at LCHS is the most prepared for life after high school than she has ever experienced in her 21 years as a counselor. Many of the students already have completed the ground work, such as college visits. Varney and the other counselors have been meeting with students non-stop, she said, adding that she anticipates an extremely high college-bound percentage from the Class of 2007.
"We want to make sure every student has a plan for after high school," she said. |
