Frohliche Weihnachlen! ("Merry Christmas" in German.)
German classes have been celebrating the holiday season with a visit from Kris Kringle and a field trip to Christkindlmarkt Chicago in Daley Plaza.
Last week, teacher Melissa Haines had students take off one shoe and place it in the hallway during class to await a gift-bearing visit from a mysterious Kris Kringle stand-in. According to German tradition, Kringle would leave children with either candy or a stick in their shoe depending on whether they had been good or bad in the past year. Bells ringing marked the end of Kringle's stop, and the students checked their shoes.
On Dec. 8, German students traveled to Chicago for the annual German festival to sample authentic Munich Leberkas, Nurnberger brats and German burgers and visit the craft tents.
