More than 50 juniors were inducted into the Lakes chapter of National Honor Society during a ceremony on Jan. 31. The ceremony, the first-ever at Lakes, included the NHS candle lighting ritual, in which a chapter candle symbolizing the eternal light of knowledge was used to light a candle representing each of the four pillars of NHS – scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Student applicants were admitted into the chapter if they demonstrated those characteristics. They were required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and complete activity forms listing the various leadership roles and service projects they are involved in at Lakes and in the community.
Faculty members who are also NHS members served as the four pillars, and they read short biographies or quotations that inductees submitted. Junior Matt Polanin, a transfer student from Stevenson High School who was inducted last spring, lit the candles of the inductees.
NHS members at Lakes will attend monthly meetings and perform at least 10 hours of community service each semester, five of which must be school-related. This spring, sophomores who have maintained a 3.5 grade point average will be invited to apply for membership. |
