The Talon Times student newspaper earned one of about 50 Pacemaker Finalist Awards at the national JEA / NSPA high school journalism convention from Nov. 9-12 in Nashville, Tennessee. Twelve members of the staff attended the convention to further their knowledge about putting out a monthly publication as well as to experience The Music City.
The award acknowledges the "general excellence and outstanding achievement" of the publication during the 2005-2006 school year, which was the newspaper's inaugural year. Hundreds of entries from across the country were submitted for the honor.
Since 1927 when the Pacemaker Award was first established, winners have been selected by the staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the fall convention. They are judged based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.
This recognition follows The Talon Times first place rating from the Kettle Moraine Press Association at its October conference.
