Peer mediators help students mend differences

At training, peer mediators helped social workers Christina Foss and David Raczynski resolve a conflict with each other during a mock conference.
When students experience a clash with a classmate, it is not always easy to ask a teacher or administrator for help. Now, students can turn to 16 freshman through junior volunteers who have been trained to be peer mediators.
Headed by LCHS social workers Christina Foss and David Raczynski, the Peer Mediator Program was designed to create a more positive school atmosphere by helping students resolve conflicts with each other in a mature and peaceful manner. Peer mediators meet with students in conflict to discuss the problem – whether it involves bullying, teasing, gossiping or some other issue – and help them determine a mutual solution. The students then sign an agreement form. All information shared during the meeting is confidential.
Students can refer themselves for peer mediator assistance. Teachers, team leaders and parents also are encouraged to submit referrals. Click here for a referral form, which should be completed and placed in the blue box in the main office or emailed to Foss or Raczynski.
