SWAT team member speaks to science classes
Michael Newman, a member of the Waukegan Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics team, spoke to seven Anatomy and Physiology classes on Oct. 13 about his career as a tactical medic.
"Tactical medicine is good medicine in bad places. That's our motto," Newman told one of the classes. "My job is to keep the SWAT team healthy."
In addition to demonstrating medical procedures, Newman shared with the students other SWAT member duties, such as search and seizure protocol.
Science teacher Tiffany Magliola said she invited Newman to speak because, "It's important that the students see how anatomy and physiology can be applied in different careers."
Magliola says she is planning to host four or five more guest speakers in the classes throughout the year. She already has scheduled a chiropractor and pediatrician. She also hopes to bring her students on a fieldtrip to the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center to witness a cardiac surgery.
