P.E. classes take on the snow one step at a time
The low temperatures have not stopped students from going outside during their physical education classes this week. They are braving the cold — in snowshoes.
Carla Thompson, P.E. Department leader, said she ordered the snowshoes this year to introduce a fun outside activity during the winter months. Unlike cross country skis, which is another option that Thompson considered, the 40 snowshoes are not a storage issue; they fit snuggly in an athletic bin. Additionally, it is necessary to send some classes outdoors each period because of space limitations inside during the snowy season.
For the past few days, students have been walking and running the trails in the shoes. And as long as there is snow, Thompson said she will have the students playing softball, capture the flag and other activities while wearing them.
"Anything you can play inside you can play in snowshoes," she said, adding that the shoes allow students to experience more than the winter activities they normally participate in, such as skiing and snowboarding. |
