Just because school is out for the summer does not mean students should stop reading. That is the philosophy of the English Department, anyway.
At the end of May, freshmen level English teachers and new LCHS Principal Jim McKay made stops at sender middle schools to introduce incoming students to that philosophy as well as hand them their summer reading projects. The now eighth grade students each were given a novel to read and a study guide to complete; both are due the first day of school on Aug. 21. The teachers also explained to students the importance of annotating books and showed the group examples of proper annotation.
Bryan Plinske, English Department leader, said the purpose of the summer reading project is to expose the students to at least one more piece of good literature that teachers otherwise would not have time to cover during the regular school year.
"Reading should be a lifetime activity; it shouldn't stop when the last bell rings," Plinske said.
