Former Bears player joins Eagles at blood drive
Jim Covert, offensive tackle for the1985 Bears Super Bowl team, paid a visit to Eagles who donated blood at the fall blood drive on Nov. 1.
Covert earlier this year was named the President and CEO of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, the parent company of LifeSource Blood Services; LifeSource has been running blood drives at LCHS for the past two years. Covert occasionally visits schools to encourage participation among students. A regular blood donor himself, Covert says he sees donating blood as "an unselfish act that saves lives."
His encouragement seemed to work this fall. The LCHS community contributed 177 pints of blood at the drive — one of two drives the school hosts every year. That's 27 more pints than the goal of 150 pints, said P.E. teacher Mike Gedville, who helps to organize the blood drives at LCHS.
Depending on the number of donors who volunteer throughout the year, the school can qualify for up to $4,000 in scholarship money for a graduating senior.
