Sam Weller, author of The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury, entertained an auditorium full of sophomore English students on Monday, April 16 as part of an in-school field trip.
Weller researched the life of Bradbury, a Waukegan native, for five years to write the first biography about the author known for his science fiction writing, including the novel Fahrenheit 451.
Most sophomore students are reading Fahrenheit 451 for their English classes this month; others read it earlier in the semester. The story centers on a protagonist who is trying to understand why his futuristic society burns books and jails anyone who expresses independent thought.
Librarian MaryLou Stampfl organized the visit with the help of the Lake Villa Public Library.
"Hearing a real-life author talk about writing and enriching the students' understanding of Ray Bradbury, an author they are currently reading, can be a very rewarding experience," said Stampfl. "Mr. Weller did not disappoint his audience."
