Guest speaker talks 'chocolate' with foods classes
Colleen Karsted, a chef instructor at culinary arts school Kendall College, visited foods classes on Thursday, Dec. 13. Karsted talked about the different careers available in the field of culinary arts and also demonstrated how to make different types of chocolate.
In other foods news, Jaclynn Gahler's Foods 3 class is polishing off the semester with a three-week-long gingerbread house unit. The students first sketched out the blueprints of their original designs, also planning the decorative look - Life Savers, gum drops and the like. Then, they actually put all of the pieces together by making the dough from scratch and baking the different parts of their houses.
Gahler said it is one of the most challenging, intensive projects the students work on throughout the semester and also one of the most enjoyable.
