The Senior Class selected Curt Onstad, social studies teacher and head wrestling coach, and guidance counselor Gwen Varney to be the faculty speakers for the first graduation ceremony in the history of Lakes.
Onstad and Varney were two of eight teachers nominated by a small group of senior students as possible candidates. The entire Class of 2007 was given the opportunity to vote on the two finalists — one male and one female — earlier this month. Nominated faculty members were required to have worked at Lakes for each of the three years the school has been open.
"This is the biggest honor I have ever had in my career," Varney said.
Onstad also said he was honored to be chosen and added that he plans to speak about change, leadership and unique opportunity, specifically relating to the opportunity the graduating class has had to shape a new school.
Other nominees included staff members Jori Bowen, Amber Carter, Gail deRivera, Brian Phelan, Luke Mertens and Mark Ring.
The graduation committee also is seeking out senior students to speak at the May 29 ceremony. Those interested should submit an application to the Cranberry Team room by the end of the day on April 16.
