Lauri Hargrove was honored for her 34 years of service as a teacher in District 117 during a district-wide ceremony on May 16. Hargrove will be retiring at the end of this school year.
During the ceremony, she accepted two awards for her contributions to the district over the years as a health and physical education teacher: one plaque for the State of Illinois Senate Recognition Award and the other from the Lake County Board.
Hargrove coached track and volleyball at ACHS for 10 years, leading one volleyball team to the program's first-ever regional championship. She also acted as the Girls Athletic Association sponsor for ACHS for three years, encouraging female students to participate in extra curricular athletic activities.
She jumpstarted the Personal Power class at ACHS and, now, at LCHS — a program designed to help any student with self esteem, problem solving, goal setting and more. She also was an active member of the teachers' association, having served as president for seven years.
In 1996, she received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Illinois Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and she was nominated for the Golden Apple Award in the early 1990s.
Hargrove, who has a minor in dance, said she plans to spend her retirement taking ballroom dancing lessons with her husband, traveling and trying activities she has never done before, such as enrolling in an art class. What she will miss most about teaching: interacting with her students and making a difference in their lives. |
