Staff members of the first edition of the literary magazine welcomed guest speaker Douglas Hebbard, a magazine publisher from Hebbard Media Consulting, on Jan. 24 in hopes of picking up a tip or two about producing the annual student publication. Hebbard provided suggestions to the class such as aiming for diversity within the literary magazine, and he described the real-life magazine business and discussed censorship.
The literary magazine, advised by English teacher April Kelly, is in its first year at LCHS. The publication is designed to act as an outlet for students and staff with literary and artistic talents. Kelly said the class has spent the first couple of weeks discussing the title of the magazine as well as a theme for the 2007 edition and establishing staff positions. Senior Abigail Grover was selected as this year's editor.
The staff will begin accepting submissions in the beginning of February. Students and staff members are encouraged to submit their creative writing, such as short stories, poetry, lyrics and dialogue. Additionally, artwork and photography are acceptable submissions. The deadline is early March.
"This is a great opportunity to get published and recognized as a writer and artist," Kelly said.
