Statistics students use data to fix parking lot woes
Dr. Yu of Northwestern University speaks to a statistics class.
As an end of the year project, students in Dan Swartz's statistics class are taking up a challenge posed by Principal Jim McKay: to use their knowledge gained over the course of the semester to search for ways to relieve the overcrowding problem in the Lakes student parking lot during pickup and drop off times. Swartz invited Dr. Yu, an assistant professor of engineering at Northwestern University and expert on traffic planning, to check out the parking lot situation first hand and speak with the class. The students will now work on collecting and analyzing data from parents, teachers and students in hopes of figuring out a solution to the traffic congestion. Their findings will go to McKay and later the District 117 School Board. Story and photo by senior Chani Bockwinkel
