Pre-prom assembly urges students to make smart choices
Marcus Newman shared with junior and senior students on May 3 how he cheated the system and got away with using drugs for several years. He was an athlete. He was in school theater productions. He always came home at a reasonable hour. He got good grades. No one suspected that he had a problem. Newman also shared his story about the day he eventually did get caught when he was in college and how it changed his life.
Newman's visit, arranged by the Student Assistance Program, fell two days before Prom as a reminder to students planning to attend the dance to make smart decisions.
Other efforts to reduce substance abuse among teenagers are being made by the Lake County After School Coalition, the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association and the Lake County Regional Office of Education. These organizations suggest that parents and guardians visit www.TheAntiDrug.com for information about how to have conversations with their children about drug and alcohol use.
