D-117 takes preventative measures to fight staph
 |
The media has brought much attention to staph infections recently, especially among high schools and sports teams.
Staph bacteria are among the most common causes of skin infections in the United States. There are many different causes of staph, most of which are easily treated with antibiotics.
The staph infection causing such a disturbance is the Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, due to its resistance to common antibiotics.
The Lake County Health Department stresses prevention, and
District 117 is taking steps to protect the school community from contracting the bacteria. Coaches have discussed the importance of good health habits with their athletes. They should take these preventative measures:
1. Wash their hands often
2. Clean their uniforms, practice gear, etc. daily
3. Do not share razors, towels and other personal hygiene products
4. Shower
5. Treat and cover any cuts or wounds in the proper manner by seeing the school nurse or athletic trainers
Additionally, the locker rooms and school sports equipment are disinfected daily.
