LCHS salutes veterans at first annual assembly
At LCHS, Veterans Day no longer means "no school." Starting this year, students will further recognize the holiday as a time to thank those who served and continue to serve in the U.S. military.
Seventy veterans and their guests were invited to spend the morning of Nov. 12 at LCHS to be honored for their services. The morning began with a breakfast, served by members of FCCLA, and culminated into an all-school assembly.
"It is great to be with a group who has an eagle as its mascot to celebrate Veterans Day," said Brigadier General Ward Arnston, one of two guest speakers. He addressed "What is Veterans Day?" and retired Colonel Gerald Benson spoke on the topic "What is a Veteran?"
The LCHS community applauded as the veterans were announced individually and walked to their seats in the gymnasium, sometimes slapping each other high fives along the way. The Chamber Choir sang "The Star-Spangled Banner", the Marching Band played the theme songs of each branch of the military, and senior Josh Beckman and junior Anthony Ward performed a "Taps" duet on their trumpets.
Junior Brandon Long and sophomore Nicole Zacarias, winners of the Veterans Day poetry contest, read their patriotic pieces, and junior Pat Adamek recited his rendition of John McCrae's "In Flander's Fields."
The event wrapped up with a slideshow of pictures of siblings, friends, parents and grandparents who serve in the military. Click here to view the presentation.
