Students experience the effects of segregation
Some people are more important than others.
That was the message advisors tried to dispel during a Diversity Week activity on Feb. 28 that segregated students based on the color of the ribbons they wore on their shirts. Freshmen with blue ribbons were given special treatment, such as sitting in the front row and being called on during class. Students with red ribbons had to sit in the back of the class. Blue ribbons could only talk to other blue ribbons, and red ribbons could only talk to red ribbons.
Freshmen discussed how they felt about being segregated during their advisory classes on Feb. 29.
Diversity Week falls during Black History Month. The Global Studies classes are revolving their studies around black history by watching films and participating in similar segregation activities as well as through discussion. Also, the morning announcements daily honor a famous black American who has played some significant role in shaping the nation. |
