The Spanish and German clubs welcomed new and old members to their first meetings of the year this week, and opened up the floor to the students to share ideas for projects, field trips, and other activities to participate in throughout the year.
Spanish teachers Rachel Morales and Tina Kupsco have teamed up to sponsor the Spanish Club this year. Morales said meetings will take place every two weeks on Wednesdays after school in Room C104. During the first meeting on Aug. 27, members snacked on chips and salsa as they discussed nominees for club officers, who will assist in organizing events.
Morales said that all activities are geared toward the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. She hopes to take weekend field trips to Spanish restaurants, bring in Spanish food, and create cultural arts and crafts. Students pay a $5 membership fee each for the year.
German teacher Melissa Haines doubles as the German Club sponsor. Haines says joining the club has many benefits, including that "it allows [German students] to speak German outside of the classroom." Additionally, students in different classes and studying at different levels have the opportunity to network while enjoying German food, watching German films, making club t-shirts, and just learning to appreciate the culture.
During the first meeting on Aug. 28, members discussed the officer positions and what they entail as well as what day of the week to hold their regular meetings. They also began to plan for Oktoberfest.
