Speakers share stories about Ukrainian genocide

Speaker Nicholas Mischenko responds to a student's question during his visit on April 11.

Nicholas Mischenko never got to meet his older brothers and his twin brother. They died during the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-1933, a time defined by famine. His grandparents died, too.
Freshmen students enrolled in Global Studies heard from Mischenko, president of the Ukrainian Genocide Famine Foundation, his daughter Katya Mischenko, and Nick Kotcherha on the history of the genocide. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session. The guest speakers' visit was part of the Global Studies class' genocide unit, said teacher Matt Rife.
Today, the Ukrainian Genocide still is not recognized by many as a true genocide, though twice as many people died compared to the Holocaust.
