Student Government meets monthly with McKay

In an effort to open communication lines between students and administrators, Student Government officers now meet monthly with Principal Jim McKay to discuss a range of issues and to problem solve. The group met for the second time on Wednesday, March 5 during the school day.
Katie Cook, Student Council sponsor, said the meeting allows the student representatives to offer their concerns to the administration; similarly, the group acts as an advisory board to McKay when he is seeking student input. For example, during the recent meeting, McKay encouraged students to become more involved with community outreach. He mentioned this weekend's efforts to support the Open Arms Mission by preparing Easter baskets for the community. Several student groups are participating in the service project. Additionally, McKay invited students to join faculty members in the Reach Out and Run 5K race in Libertyville on April 12, which benefits local families in need.
Likewise, McKay followed through after last month's meeting when the students said the school needed to do more to recognize Black History Month and to educate the younger grade levels about appreciating diversity. He also made sure that the recent Battle of the Sexes pep rally went on even when there was a question about whether it would fit into the school calendar.
Cook said so far, the meetings have resulted in progress for the school community, and she anticipates that positive change will continue to come out of the meetings.
