Forty-seven juniors and sophomores were inducted into the LCHS chapter of the National Honor Society during a candlelight ceremony on April 16. Guidance Counselor Gwen Varney presented an inspirational speech using examples from Highlights magazine, and school board member Joyce Heneberry, Principal Jim McKay, Superintendent Jay Sabatino and others were present to offer their congratulations to the new members.

Candidates received invitations to apply if they had a grade point average of at least 3.5. From there, they completed an extensive application consisting of school, community and leadership involvement, which includes sports, clubs, and volunteer service. Faculty members also rated each applicant based on character. The candidates then were selected by the Faculty Council based on the information they had provided along with faculty ratings.
The National Honor Society, sponsored by teachers Jeff Gutke and Pat Goodrich, is highly involved in community outreach, including hosting the Eagle Relay to Give Kids Hope, with proceeds going to Kids Hope United; a holiday hat and mitten drive to benefit the Open Arms Mission; donating money to the Heifer International project for the purchase of a goat and bees; involvement with the peer tutoring program at LCHS; and working with the Lake County Forest Preserve during its restoration days.
