Starting soon, about 30 students will volunteer their time as well as their academic abilities and knowledge to help others who are struggling in classes.
The peer tutoring program will run similar to last year's format, with volunteers available in the lower library during lunch study halls on Mondays through Fridays and after school Mondays through Thursdays. However, the program will be even more structured this year, said Cheryl Cox, director of guidance and instruction.
For example, the tutors received about three hours of training on Oct. 17, unlike last year. During that time, special education teacher Tia Martinez and guidance counselor Nicole Repa led discussion about what the peer tutors' expectations are for the program. The group also expressed what they hope struggling students will get out of coming to them for help. Additionally, they watched a video and talked about how to help students with different learning styles, Martinez said.
Another improvement to the program is the tutoring schedule, which will hold tutors more accountable for doing their job. Also, Martinez and Repa are the designated "go to" people if tutors have questions — something not available to tutors last year.
Peer tutors either were recommended to participate in the program by a faculty member or they volunteered themselves. Martinez said that they would welcome more tutors, particularly upperclassmen students. Click here to complete an application. Click here to view the tutoring schedule. |
