Local politicians participate in public forum
Students, faculty, and local politicians swarmed the auditorium the morning of Sept. 29 to participate in the school’s first ever political forum.
Rebecca Holst, Social Studies Department Leader, and Jaclyn Shapiro, Social Studies teacher, organized the event, which addressed both Democratic and Republican views on current ideas, issues, and plans. Most information was kept local, though many national topics also were discussed.
Juniors and seniors attended one of two 90-minute sessions during either first or second periods. A similar community event began at 7 p.m. that evening.
Four seniors enrolled in AP Government moderated, including Kaela Talley, Rob Thomas, Hunter Mckenzie, and Anthony Ward. The politicians present were Republicans: Dan Venturi, Sandy Cole, Suzi Schmidt, Steve Greenberg, Michael Waller, Linda Pederson, Sally Cofelt, and Willard Helander. Across the stage were Democratic representatives: Jim Parks, Peter Grant, Dr. Richard Keller, Gail Spencer, Nancy Shepardson and Cynthia Horan.
They introduced themselves, spoke directly about their positions, and many encouraged students to vote. Students and staff will have the opportunity to register to vote for the upcoming election during lunch periods on Friday, Oct. 3. Anyone interested in registering should bring their driver's license and student I.D.
