Child HIV/AIDS victims 'Speak Out'
Children who have HIV or AIDS or who have been affected by the disease in some way spoke to LCHS students about their experiences on Oct. 23. Organized by the P.E./Health Department, the panel of 9 to 12-year-olds offered background about HIV and AIDS and explained ways the virus is contracted, how to prevent infection, and how the disease is treated.
"I wish there would be a cure for HIV," 10-year-old Aliese told students during their P.E. classes. The children also talked about Camp Kindle, a week-long summer camp for children ages 7-15 who have HIV or AIDS. The camp is designed to offer infected children a place to express themselves and build a relationship among other children with HIV/AIDS.
The "Speak Out" panel was arranged by Project Kindle, which offers resources to families who are affected by HIV/AIDS and travels around the country to educate others about the illness.
