A story based on the Salem witch trials of the late 1600s comes to stage May 8-10 at 7 p.m. in the theatre.
Director Bridget Sundin said she chose Arthur Miller's The Crucible for the spring play because she loves the story and "it allows students a heightened experience in dramatic literature, as each person is playing a historical person that really existed in Salem, Massachusetts." The play also is appropriate for the LCHS stage because juniors read it during their English classes.
Twenty-three actors and about 50 members of the crew have been preparing for the show since mid-March. Sundin said she has been pleased with the cast's "connection", which has been advantageous for rehearsals. The group has been working on movement exercises, yoga, and meditation to enhance each actor's physical understanding of their character, she said.
The play is about a group of girls accused of practicing witchcraft after they were discovered dancing and chanting in the forest — an event that creates fear among the townspeople who believe they now are in the presence of evil. The girls then shift those accusations to other characters to clear their names.
Tickets go on sale next week and also will be sold at the door.
