Volleyball teams raise $3,600 for breast cancer research

The LCHS and ACHS volleyball programs will combine forces on Friday, Oct. 17 to help raise money for breast cancer research. The teams will face off for the second annual Volleyball for the Cure in the LCHS gymnasium, with the sophomore game beginning at 5 p.m. and the varsity game following at 6 p.m. New this year will be a student vs. faculty game, which will begin at about 7 p.m.
Eagles Head Coach Carla Thompson introduced Volleyball for the Cure to the district last year, after hearing about similar ideas organized by other schools throughout the country. Volleyball for the Cure raises money through the sale of pink t-shirts for $10 each, which should be worn for the matches to fill the gymnasium with pink. About 500 shirts were presold this year, and Thompson says more will be available for purchase at the event.
Also, the LCHS teams have been collecting donations during home matches, at football games, and at the Homecoming parade. Donations will be accepted at the door, too. Last year's event at ACHS raised about $8,800, which was handed over to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This year, Thompson said the teams hope to raise $5,000.
To help promote the event, the Sales and Marketing class taught by Kara Harper, also a freshman volleyball coach, has spent the past few weeks organizing several marketing ideas, including a minute-long commercial. The class also established the idea of a faculty vs. student volleyball match, and the students have created games for the fans to participate in between the sophomore and varsity games. Raffle winners will go home with certificates from Lowes, Athletico, various salons, or quilts and blankets.
Breast cancer survivors in attendance will receive a flower in recognition of their efforts to battle the illness.
