Students had the opportunity to view what science teacher Jeff Newton called an "eye opening, educational" presentation about climate change on Thursday, Nov. 19. Alliance for Climate Education gave its multimedia presentation during every period. By the end of the day, more than 100 students had signed up to receive additional information from ACE about ways they can contribute to saving the planet.
"It's been a big hit for them," Newton said about the presentation and the conversations that have followed in the classroom.
Newton invited ACE to speak at LCHS after learning about the organization at a conference for science teachers. Most of the science classes discuss climate change, green house gasses, and energy usage at some point in the curriculum, Newton said, so ACE's visit was relevant for many reasons. The multimedia portion of the presentation also was appealing to students, with its contemporary music and themes, he said.
ACE offers grants and scholarships to students who propose projects to help address climate change or who volunteer to work for the organization. Newton also invites interested students to join the school's environmental club, EverGreen, which meets Mondays after school in C239.
