EverGreen is seeking students to help paint signs advertising Lindenhurst's annual Earth-Arbor Day Celebration, scheduled for April 18 at the Village Hall. The six large signs will replace smaller, older signs that in the past have appeared alongside the main roads in Lindenhurst prior to the event. EverGreen sponsor Stephanie Bruser said town officials approached the student group for help, and members gladly accepted. The group, which focuses all of its activities on promoting green living, plans to complete the signs on Monday, March 23 after school. Bruser said she is willing to offer community service hours to National Honor Society members who help. Everyone is invited to attend. In addition to making signs, EverGreen also will make an appearance at the celebration. They will hold a free recycle ring toss as well as face painting. They also will sell Smencils for $1. Another large project on EverGreen's "to do" list is building a 6-foot tree sculpture out of recyclable materials, including 2-liter plastic bottles, soda cans, wood, and newspapers. Bruser said the group hopes to complete the tree by the end of April. It will stand in the commons, the cafeteria, or the main foyer for the rest of the year and next year along with a donation box. Proceeds will go to a local environmental organization. The tree, Bruser said, would be a visible reminder to the school community to try to live green. EverGreen also invites new members to join the highway clean-up in April. The date is to be determined, but usually clean-ups take place on a Saturday or Sunday for about two or three hours.
