FCCLA sends seven to state competition
Seven members of the LCHS chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America traveled to the state contest in Springfield from April 16-18, after qualifying for the event at regionals earlier this year.
One of those students, senior Sam Timmis, brought home his seventh Most Outstanding award in the culinary arts category; this was his eighth competition in his four years as an Eagle.
FCCLA sponsor Karen Schneider said these contests give students who are interested in pursuing careers in the culinary arts, apparel design, interior design, and more — as Timmis is — a chance to build their resumes and prepare them for the next step. In Timmis' case, it's the Culinary Institute of America in New York, she said.
More than 900 students in the state participated in the contest, which also included educational workshops and guest speakers. Other Eagles who competed included Gold medalists Kathleen Hochbaum, Kailey Molloy, and Samantha Wojnicki and Silver medalists Jessica David, Jessie Kohler, and Jenna Schellinger.
Schneider says most of her students work on their projects as part of a class project and, if necessary, they make improvements on them after regionals in preparation for state.
FCCLA has been a student organization since LCHS first opened, and Schneider said she hopes to recruit more interest from students in the coming year to keep the program rolling. |
