Nearly 100 fewer failing grades appeared on first semester report cards in contrast to last year at this time. While 271 failures were issued in the fall of 2007, 183 were issued last fall. Additionally, most student grades were As and Bs.
Assistant Principal Dave Newberry said this growth in student achievement is related to the school's Response to Intervention initiatives, and specifically, a staff-wide goal known among teachers as Goal 108.
"Each teacher has an individual plan for students who are failing," Newberry said of the goal.
Teacher plans include increased parent contact, particularly for academically struggling students. Some teachers also are helping their students set individualized goals, and they are taking other measures to help students successfully continue through high school.
RTI is in its beginning stages across the country. A committee of LCHS teachers and administrators continue to finalize the school's RTI plan to encourage character building and academic achievement among the Eagles.
