Wrestler wins district's first IHSA state championship
Senior Matt Holmes became the first student-athlete in District 117 history to win an IHSA state championship on Saturday, Feb. 21, after he captured the Division 2A wrestling title for the 135 pound weight class. The meet was held at the University of Illinois.
Before departing LCHS for the contest, the Lakes community sent off Holmes and teammate, junior Phil Cappitelli, who qualified for state in the 160 weight class, during an in-school parade. Students lined the main hallway and applauded and cheered as Holmes and Cappitelli were escorted out of the building alongside their coach, Curt Onstad, and the Eagle drum line.
"I accomplished my dream — that I wanted to win state," Holmes said.
Holmes' 2008-2009 record is 43-4. His high school career record is 151-26. Holmes said his next plan is to win a national title at the college level. He has not decided upon a college yet, but two schools he is considering are North Central College in Naperville and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. |
