Two weeks still remain in the Library Media Center's Eagles Read competition. Even though one team already has completed the relay challenge for the first place prize, another larger prize will be awarded at the end of the contest through a drawing of any student who read this semester's book, Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games.
The novel is about a future North America, in which the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition called the Hunger Games. The Games pit young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, and 16-year-old Katniss's skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister's place.
With the help of financial backing from the Booster Club, the Library Media Center has been able to circulate 30 copies of the novel among teams of 10 students, faculty, and/or staff members.
"This is generating a lot of buzz," said Katie Plese, library media specialist, who added that the purpose of the contest is to get students to read and to engage in conversations about reading. And so far, she says, it's working. The library has four copies of the book's sequel, Catching Fire, as well as one audio version. All of those are checked out, and six students have copies on reserve.
The competition began at the beginning of the month and will conclude with a Battle of the Book trivia game in the Commons at 3 p.m. on Dec. 8. Students who read the book are invited to enter their name in a drawing to participate in the contest; only 24 students will be chosen to play and there will be two winners. Plese also encourages students to check out the Media Center's new blog and to look for a fan page on Facebook soon.
