Teachers become students for 25 minutes during the monthly "Lunch and Learn" seminars, in which a faculty member shares with colleagues his or her expertise on a specific and useful topic.
The seminars began last year, when representatives from the English Department presented on various writing strategies that teachers of all content areas could use in their classes. This year, the seminars continue with a wider variety of seminar topics.
Some of the topics covered this year include "Writing College Recommendations," "Testing for College: What Every Teacher Should Know," as well as how to implement various teaching strategies into the classroom. On Jan. 27, media specialist Katie Plese discussed writing across content areas as teachers in attendance flipped through helpful handouts and literature and enjoyed chips and sandwiches.
Cheryl Cox, director of guidance and instruction and organizer of the seminars, said one of the most difficult parts of professional development is finding time. "Lunch and Learn" helps to solve that obstacle by offering focused, "bite-sized pieces of learning" during teachers' lunch periods, she said.
