Fourth through sixth graders played games to learn about fractions and multiplication during the annual Math Fair on March 10. More than 225 students from the local sender schools attended, making it the most highly attended fair ever.
"It was nice having so many kids here," said math teacher Jill Farrell, who led the organization of the event.
Farrell attributed the high attendance to the visits the Math Department and some students paid to four middle schools to promote the event. Additionally, the day of the week—a Tuesday—appeared to make a difference; last year's fair was held on a Wednesday.
Math students spent the past two to three weeks in and outside of class working in small groups to develop math games related to the concepts taught at the middle school level, Farrell said. Some of the games included spin-offs of Twister and Deal or No Deal. Math on the Fly, Wheel of Fractions, darts, and dodgeball also made an appearance.
The Math Department will continue its week of festivities with the celebration of Pi Day. Pi Day is March 14, a Saturday, but the department has activities planned for Friday during math classes.
