McKay steps into co-superintendent role in 2010-2011

Principal Jim McKay, pictured here at the Homecoming bonfire last fall, will be moving to the district office as co-superintendent in 2010-2011.
Principal Jim McKay is preparing to serve District 117 in a different way — as co-superintendent alongside ACHS Principal Mike Nekritz. The two will assume post for the 2010-2011 school year, following the retirement of Superintendent Jay Sabatino, who has held the position since the summer of 2004.
Sabatino shared this plan with faculty and staff late last month, and the School Board has approved his retirement as well as the unique co-superintendent arrangement.
"I think [ACHS Principal Mike Nekritz] and I know District 117 very well and have a good understanding of our educational goals," McKay said. "While a new person may be exciting, there is always a learning curve; in this situation no valuable time will be lost."
McKay has been the principal at LCHS since the fall of 2006, and prior to becoming an Eagle, he was the assistant principal for curriculum and instruction at ACHS for two years. He says, as co-superintendent, he is looking forward to continuing to develop and strengthen the district's academic programs in order to enhance student achievement.
The district likely will post the LCHS principal position in the fall, McKay said, and then form a hiring committee comprising parents, students, teachers, and administrators.
