Students who demonstrate academic and community leadership were welcomed into the LCHS chapter of the National Honor Society on April 29. Sixty-two new members were inducted during a candle lighting ceremony held in the auditorium.
Sophomores and juniors who have at least a 3.5 grade point average are invited to apply to become an NHS member. The extensive application asks candidates to describe their involvement in school and community related activities, such as sports and clubs, as well as their volunteer service. Faculty members rate each candidate based on character, and the Faculty Council makes the final selections.
Kevin Kullby, social studies teacher, presented the faculty speech during the ceremony, and Tracy McGrath represented the School Board, challenging new inductees to go above and beyond in the area of service.
Sponsored by teachers Jeff Gutke and Pat Goodrich, NHS regularly participates in community service projects throughout the year, including the fall Eagle Relay to Give Kids Hope, a holiday hat and mitten drive to benefit Open Arms Mission, and the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days. Many members also are peer tutors.
