Class of 2010 steps up to the challenge, sets new ACT school record
Principal Jim McKay and Assistant Principal Dave Newberry recognized 14 seniors Wednesday for their performance on the ACT portion of the Prairie State Achievement Exam last April. Carly Wade, Caroline Prendergast, Candice Kosanke, Nicole Kosanke, John Sieracke, and Julija Vinckeviciute earned the top scores for their class. Dylan Griffin, Dragan Jovanovic, Mark Molloy, Emma Howard, Shannon Wibright, Billy Brown, Nicole Buchholz, Erik Hayes, Michele Moes, Paul Twarowski, and Evan Vandermeer made the most gains compared to when they took the PLAN test as sophomores. As promised, those students were awarded free parking passes. They also had the opportunity to share with the administrators their feelings about the amount and type of preparation they receive for the exam at school — information the administrators plan to use to make improvements.
The Class of 2010 scored a 22.2 cumulative average on the ACT. This is the highest in district history, and it exceeds the challenge administrators posed to the seniors in the months prior to the test: to score a 22. Seniors are invited to a tailgate party prior to the home football game on Friday, Sept. 11 to recognize their achievement.
Newberry said the "steady rise" in ACT scores from year to year can be attributed to teachers and to the motivation of the students. The Eagles are expected to continue performing well in the future, perhaps not plateauing until six or seven years from now.
